Safety First

Safety is paramount to everything we do. For any project that involves electrical engineering, safety is a major concern. After all, we are talking about building power distribution systems. These are complex, powerful systems. Ground fault interrupters and breakers need to trip at the lowest power levels to protect humans from being electrocuted or from grounded wires starting fires.

Our electrical engineering work spans several areas, including the following:


Lighting: Our team of expert electrical engineers will help you transform darkness to light in all of your projects by combining beauty, utility, and efficiency. Together they make something truly spectacular.

Our highly trained electrical engineers are experts at engineering exterior and interior lighting and lighting controls. So what does this mean? Exterior lighting now needs to meet codes for dark sky and light trespass control, meaning that the light needs to all be aimed downward and be cut off to avoid lighting adjacent properties. LED lights are being used almost exclusively for exterior applications because their extremely long life means fewer replacements requiring the use of expensive lifts. Interior lighting is both an art and a science. Often architects will select specific fixtures for aesthetically sensitive areas within buildings.

LED lights are often selected now for their energy efficiency, long life, and ability to be dimmed where daylight controls are used. LEDs are also capable of producing an array of colors which are increasingly being used outside and inside of buildings. G&M has completed the St. Louis County Government Services Center in Duluth, MN, which is a complete LED fixture retrofit with daylight controls.



Power & Distribution: Power and distribution is more than simply bringing energy to a component. It is a complex system of conveying safe, efficiently produced power that will give life to an entire building.

Power comes into the building from either a pole mounted or pad mounted transformer that is most often owned by a utility company. The service can come into the building either from overhead or underground. The service may be single phase or three-phase depending on the building load. Metering depends on the size of the service and rate structure. There may be a single meter or up to three main service meters. For some building types (data centers or healthcare facilities) an emergency generator may be pad mounted outside or located within the building. When the utility power fails a signal is sent for the generator to start and then power is automatically transferred from the generator to the appropriate distribution system.

Some buildings have complete emergency power back up and others have only limited service that is identified by red-colored outlets. The distribution system is made up of main service panels and then distribution panels throughout a facility. There may be multiple voltages used in a facility which requires separate distribution panels. Lighting panels may use 277V where normal outlets need to be 120V. Increasingly loads are being sub-metered to track energy use of equipment or systems.



Telecommunications: The term “low-voltage systems” refers to all systems that are powered with less than 120V. This includes Audio, Video, Data, fire and security systems. G&M works with a group call Data Core Engineers to provide AV&D design for projects. Our electrical engineers design fire and security systems.



Photovoltaics: harness the energy of the sun to power your projects. G&M has worked with design/build contractors to design photovoltaic systems for everything from small entry sign lighting up to larger 580-kilowatt systems.

The addition of the last photovoltaic arrays at the Electrical Training Institute (ETI) project in Commerce, CA (see below) evolved the project to become a “net-zero plus” building, meaning it produces more energy than it uses over the course of a year.



Smart Micro-Grid: Our engineers are at the forefront of cutting-edge electrical technologies. We put this knowledge to practice in your projects by creating unique smart micro-grids.

Those technologies form the basis of what is called a smart micro-grid. The purpose for a smart micro-grid is to generate and distribute power locally as climate change is increasingly causing more extreme weather occurrences that knock out the macro-grid to large geographic areas. The smart micro-grid technologies are also preparing for buildings to buy and sell power to the macro-grid based on time of day rates.

At ETI the electric vehicle charging stations can either charge or discharge the car’s batteries depending on the building’s needs or favorable time of day rates. Soon building owners who have invested in this technology will be able to buy and store electricity when it is less expensive and sell back electricity when it is more expensive.
