Microgrid Test Demonstration Project
Port Hueneme, CA

Testing the Viability of Renewable Energy

Gausman & Moore provided electrical engineering services for a microgrid test demonstration on the Port Hueneme Naval Base. Services included photovoltaic (PV) design drawings for 50kW of new container-mounted PV panels. Other key elements of the project included interconnection with the existing Mobile Utilities Support Equipment (MUSE) service for grid-tie setup, provisions for future reconnection to the demonstration power distribution and coordination with base facilities, and other project participants (battery, inverter, PV panel vendors).

The purpose of the project was to provide a microgrid test to validate the viability of using energy technologies. Renewable and traditional power generation systems are integrated with energy storage to demonstrate energy security.

A primary goal of the project was reducing utility costs while maintaining power quality and reliability. Another goal was demonstrating energy security and backup power during a utility outage.
