Preserving History While Enabling Progress

Gausman & Moore understands that retrofitting a landmark requires engineering expertise, as well as an appreciation of the value each community holds for its own unique heritage.

Built in 1923, the Baudette Depot was the hub of life in this town on the banks of the Rainey River along the U.S./Canada border. In its early days, the railway was Baudette’s lifeline, providing the efficient delivery of essential cargo – groceries, building materials, mail – and reliable transportation for Baudette citizens and visitors.

Advances in ground transportation eventually rendered the rail station obsolete, and the Canadian National Railways shuttered the depot building in the mid-1980’s.

In 2005, the Depot Preservation Alliance (DPA) was instrumental in listing the Baudette Depot on the National Register of Historic Places, a key step in adapting the landmark building to serve and educate the community for generations to come.

G&M engineers met with the DPA and its architects, learning about the depot’s historical significance, as well as the Alliance’s objectives for the future. The G&M team also examined principles detailed for the Baudette Depot by the University of Minnesota Center for Sustainable Building Research, drawing from the State of Minnesota B3 Sustainable Design Guidelines.

G&M modifications brought building systems to current codes and standards, enabling efficient facility operation and meeting the requirements of modern tenants an the visiting public.

Improved HVAC systems include modified ductwork for climate control and ventilation. Updated plumbing supplies restrooms, janitorial services and a specialized sink for the artist’s studio. Renovated electrical powers new outlets and lights, and existing equipment throughout the facility; track lighting enables the flexibility to focus full spectrum high quality light levels on critical work areas and displays in the Artisan’s Marketplace and the Historical Exhibition on local transportation.

Today, the depot is once again a hub of activity and pride for the city of Baudette.
